Al-Okailat is a group of brave men from different tribes of Najd - Al-Qassim (spicifically Buraydah) who travelled between the Arabian Peninsula and Kuwait, Egypt, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Palestine for trade purposes; establishing a firm economic power at the time via import-export business.

Their main cargo is camles along with horses, livestock, spices, fabric and cooking oil.
Their era continued for about 4 (four) centuries up to 1949 A.D. and was a landmark of the economic development of Saudi Arabia and the Arabian Peninsula.

Their journies were through harsh environments (mainly deserts) facing sand storms, freezing nights and bandits. Thus, they were to show great deal of courage and bravery.
Their journies took months, and most of the time years of travel, and among the qualities that seem to be connotations attributed to their name were generosity and noble moral code.

The man in this photo is Ibraheem (Abraham), a grand son of the Okailat whom I met in Qassim - Buraydah, Crafts Market. He owns a small shop and displays various tools and equipment used by the Okailat at the time.
as we were talking I asked him "how old are you?"
He took a split second of silence, smiled and said "Not more than 70." showing a passionate appetite for life!
I smiled back and knew he is much older than 70 years, but has the spirit of a young vigorous man.

Al Okailat: Brave men that history knows very well, while the young generation knows so little about.

Taken during my visit to Al-Qassim

A barn is an agricultural building used for storage and as a covered workplace. It may sometimes be used to house livestock or to store farming vehicles and equipment. Barns are most commonly found on a farm or former farm.
A barn meant for keeping cattle may be known as a byre.
Older barns were usually built from lumber sawn from timber on the farm, although stone barns were sometimes built in areas where stone was a cheaper building material.
Modern barns are more typically steel buildings. Prior to the 1900s, most barns were timber framed (also known as post and beam) forming very strong structures to withstand storms and heavy loads of animal feed. From about 1900 to 1940, many large dairy barns were built in northern USA. These commonly have gambrel or hip roofs to maximize the size of the hayloft above the dairy roof, and have become associated in the popular image of a dairy farm. The barns that were common to the wheatbelt held large numbers of pulling horses such as Clydesdales or Percherons. These large wooden barns, especially when filled with hay, could make spectacular fires that were usually total losses for the farmers. With the advent of balers it became possible to store hay and straw outdoors in stacks surrounded by a plowed fireguard. Many barns in the northern United States are painted red with a white trim. One possible reason for this is that ferric oxide, which is used to create red paint, was the cheapest and most readily available chemical for farmers in New England and nearby areas. Another possible reason is that ferric oxide acts a preservative[2] and so painting a barn with it would help to protect the structure.
With the popularity of tractors following World War II many barns were taken down or replaced with modern Quonset huts made of plywood or galvanized steel. Beef ranches and dairies began building smaller loftless barns often of Quonset huts or of steel walls on a treated wood frame (old telephone or power poles). By the 1960s it was found that cattle receive sufficient shelter from trees or wind fences (usually wooden slabs 20% open).

Church of the Intercession at Vytegra

Church of the Intercession at Vytegra

The 24-domed Church at Vytegra, on the Volga-Baltic waterway, dated from the early eighteenth century. It was built by local carpenters who didn't use any nails, but only joints that were carved or doweled. The church no longer exists, having been burned down (apparently by accident) in 1963. There's a small, but also kind of cheap irony to be found in the fact that one of the few other shots which SPG took in Vytegra was of, you guessed it, the local fire department, standing outside their station with all their equipment. According to Wikipedia, the church has not yet (as of 2009) been restored.

A beautiful shot, with the rhythms of the main building curiously echoed in the diagonal stakes and the line of the fence in the foreground. I don't know what the stakes are for, but similar ones show up in others of SPG's shots of groups of peasants haying. I've probably made this comment before, about another of SPG's church shots, but I think the ascending host of domes are supposed to imitate clouds, that is, a vision of heaven, or perhaps clouds surrounding a holy mountain, like Zion or Jerusalem (which is pretty much the same thing, mythologically speaking). So each church recalls the world centre, the navel of the universe.

The green plate for this image was badly damaged. I used the dust and scratches filter (set for about 10 pixels) on the sky, and fixed other defects individually with the clone stamp tool. The D&S filter is a good tool, but it inevitably blurs the image, so that some definition in the clouds was lost. Mea culpa.

Selinsgrove Elementary School - Selinsgrove - PA

Selinsgrove Elementary School - Selinsgrove - PA

The Selinsgrove Area School District decided that this facility should be a comprehensive high performance building to provide savings for future energy needs in addition to supporting the educational needs for up to 665 students. The additions and alterations to the Selinsgrove Area Elementary School, on the 7.86 acre site, has obtained LEED® Gold certification.

The project goals were to construct a building that consumes less energy, electricity, and water than the existing building, by using energy efficient products, appliances and equipment. The construction of the building used materials with a recycled content, which were regionally manufactured or supplied.

To promote water efficiency the facility uses water efficient fixtures, dual-flush toilets, waterless urinals, and an innovative kitchen design, which reduces water consumption by 46% compared to a conventional building based on ASHREA standards. The project also employed a commissioning agent for the Fundamental Commissioning LEED credit to verify the systems performance, reduced energy and operating costs, and to provide documented confirmation that the facility fulfills the functional and performance requirements and reduces energy and operating costs as designed.

Included in the new construction is a green roof over the gymnasium lobby with an adjacent observation window for the students. Not only is utility of roof cover provided but numerous ecological and economic benefits are realized. These benefits include: extended roof life expectancy, sound insulation, thermal insulation, natural habitat, high water retention, climate moderation, and pollution reduction, in addition to providing a visual teaching tool for the students

Selinsgrove Elementary School has received the Green Building Association of Central Pennsylvania's 2010 Overall Design Award. Congratulations to EI Associates Harrisburg Project Team !!

Orange Juice

Orange Juice

Public domain image from United States Dept. of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service.

Fifty years ago, frozen orange juice was just a flavorless commercial flop. The only orange juice you could get back then was either squeezed from fresh oranges, mixed from a relatively tasteless concentrate, or poured from a can-and it tasted like a can!

All this at a time when lots of good Florida oranges were going to waste.

60 years ago, Louis G. MacDowell, director of research for the Florida Citrus Commission, had an idea. He suggested that adding a little single-strength fresh juice, or "cut-back," to slightly overconcentrated orange juice might restore the flavor and aroma lost during vacuum evaporation.

He took the idea to USDA researchers, the folks with the equipment and expertise to help develop the idea. Not only did it work but the vastly improved concentrate could be easily frozen. And so began the success story that's now such a familiar sight on the breakfast table-frozen concentrated orange juice.

19/365: 1/19/09 - Fire

19/365: 1/19/09 - Fire

This is how my day went yesterday. I'm using borrowed bits and pieces of computer equipment and put together something that works. I didn't do any editing at all of this pic, I just wanted to get it up and let everyone know that the animals and I are all ok. I had some smoke inhalation... my lungs are killing me. And I have a small burn on my hand. All in all, it could have been much, much worse.

I was asleep when this started. I'm assuming that it started at the surge protector, as all the damage seems centered right there. I've got more pictures that'll show more of the damage.

The actual fire was relatively small, and I put it out myself. But the smoke was so thick, I couldn't see where the windows were with the blinds open...and this happened in the middle of the day.

Fortunately, I didn't lose anything that's irreplaceable. The most inconvenient part of it all is that my wallet was on the desk there right in the middle of where the fire was. There is not a recognizable trace of it left. So my driver's license, my debit card, my social security card, and about $50 in cash is gone.

The computer itself survived, although the mouse, keyboard, and monitor are toast. My camera, lenses, and lights are ok. The rats and the dogs are ok. I'm ok except for a little pain in my hand and very, very sore lungs.

Even Georgetown University locks it's ICT-equipped classrooms
